Hello Doctor, Had A Small Accident With A Condom Breaking

default
Posted on Wed, 27 May 2020
Question: Hello Doctor, Had a small accident with a condom breaking during vaginal intercourse with a girl of unknown status. Quickly noticed and (30s later?) fixed. I do not have possibility of easy access to PEP and not sure how badly I need it considering above scenario. I do have Truvada with me as PReP since I planned to start using it. I did read in the past Truvada was also used as PEP. Now it is more often with combination with something else. Should I take Prep which I planned to start either way or there is no point and still look for emergency full-pep?

Brief Answer:
The risk of getting HIV from such exposure is less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Dysk2203,

Welcome to Ask a Specialist Service.

The risk of getting HIV from single short unprotected intercourse due to condom break with the girl of unknown status is considered very less and PEP is usually not recommended in such exposure so you need not to worry much. As your friend I will also advice not to indulge in such kind of sexual practices in future.

Further, Truvuda can be taken as PEP but it should be started within 72 hours of the exposure so if you want to take it first consult your physician and then start. You can go for HIV testing after 15 days with 4th generation HIV Duos test to know about your status. If any other query is there feel free to ask me again.

Thank You
