Question: From last 7-8 months, I have developed a complicated issue of ear pain+headache. It seems complicated because of diverse reasons for pain getting started. Those are:

Type-1:
(i) intense sounds, e.g., horn of bike, loud sound in cinema hall;
(ii) talking to XXXXXXX phone for more than 2 min will trigger that pain;
Type-2:
(iii) if I have to listen to any person that I don’t like (here the issue is not about intensity of sound but something related to my inability to withstand irritating situations);
(iv) sometimes pressured situation triggers pain.

I had used headphone when working in the lab before developement of this pain for 2-3 years regularly.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. It's evident that you are having intolerance to loud sounds and pain starts on hearing those sounds. I think you should check your hearing status. Due to prolonged use of ear phone and exposure of loud sound the nerve responsible for hearing get weak. Then it became very intolerant to hear loud sound. There are also other diseases in the cochlea and nerve which can cause similar symptoms. So at first get a hearing checked: pure tone audiogram and impedance audiogram. In some diseases like otosclerosis( abnormal calcification of ossicles), endolymphatic hydrops( distension of the vestibular system) similar symptoms happen. So along with the hearing test, you need to do speech audiometry and electrocochleogram. Review with the reports and a diagnosis can be made. Till them avoid ear phones, loud noise. Wear ear muff to protect from loud sound. Take vitamin tablet neurobion or any other vitamin B 12 complex tablet which can strengthen your nerve. Please review if you have any queries.

Dear Dr. Basak,

Thanks for the reply.

I will be galde if you share your view about type ii observation which also triggers ear pain and headache (rather in more effective way than loud sound). The pain is severly triggered by uneasy social situations and being with people that I don't like.

Do you think I should also consult a psychiatrist.

Yours sincerely
