For Dr Branch I Wasn T Able To Get Back

Question: For Dr Branch I wasn't able to get back to your previous answer about my wife's problem. I took her to the ER on Saturday, 26 October, at the urging of Urgent Care, mostly it was beyond their expertise to address, even tho it is terribly expensive at the ER, re swelling in her leg, she is seeing a DR about that. This time it was stomach distress over several weeks duration. But they spent the day running all kinds of tests and found nothing that they could fix. I am referring to her stomach distress addressed some time ago. She is in misery, can't eat, and no one can find the reason for her distress. There is no pain, as such, just upset stomach like nausea but no vomiting. They think it may be GERD but she has no other symptoms of GERD. She had a scope some time ago but nothing found. She has a "bad" taste in her mouth, but it is not metallic or sour, and is mostly in her throat, not the tongue. She is to see several practitioners in a few weeks concerning this but do you have any idea as to the cause of her "bad" taste in her mouth. It is not related to eating. That is eating doesn't make it worse. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Many causes for altered taste

Detailed Answer:
Hello, it's good to hear from you again. I'm sorry your wife has been having more medical issues lately. The "bad" taste in her mouth, along with the stomach distress, is a perplexing issue. There could be many causes, and I can't say for sure which one may be more likely in your wife's case. I looked at all her medications, and none of them seem to commonly cause this problem. GERD is a common cause of this problem, and so I my first thought would be to try to treat for that first, even without any other symptoms. Other possibilities are gum disease, zinc deficiency, thrush (which usually has white plaques on the tongue, patient on antibiotics can get this more easily), Vitamin B12 deficiency, and some autoimmune disorders such as Sjogren's syndrome. So I would suggest talking with her doctor about some of these possibilities, and probably they will want to try treating with a PPI medication like Prilosec first to see if that helps.

I hope that helps and that this improves for your wife. Please do feel free to keep me updated and let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help.
