Does Pumpkin Seeds Cause Coumadin?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Mar 2016
Question: Hi. I am on Coumadin and am a vegetarian. I would like to know if eating Pumpkin seeds can cause thinning of the blood, as without any dose change of the Coumadin, my bloody noses bleed a lot more. (INR is in perfect range for 4 yrs)
Is there any other nut or seed that would be a better source of protein for me than Pumpkin without causing worse bleeding of the nose??

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I am Dr.Barani and I am pleased to assist you.

No, pumpkin seeds do not cause thinning of blood. Even though there are several websites where it's mentioned (Rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acid which reduces chances of clotting) but this actually lacks enough medical data to say so.

There are no clear scientific evidence to say that pumpkin seeds cause thinning of blood.

Pumpkin seeds in medicinal doses usually are safe and do not cause any serious side effects.
In larger doses it can cause increased urination.

If you have increased episodes of bleeding, you may require a change in the treatment plan. Discuss with your doctor about this.

Please let me know if there are any further queries.

Dr.Barani
