Does Cereal Consumption Increase The Chance Of Kidney Stone?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: Dr.
I have been recently diagnized for kidney stone of 10.1mm (I do not have any pain or symptoms) but I have taken an ultrasonic sitting to break the stone.

My question is , I am a big fan of Ragi (Finger Millet) and Bajra (Pearl Millet) and consume them atleast thrice a week. I also consume other millets periodically .

Could this be the reason for the kidney stone.....Also is it good continuing to consume these millets ?

Please advice

First of all thanks for choosing Healthcaremagic for posting your query.

Ragi and other millets are high in Calcium and high calcium levels are one of the cause of Kidney stones .

So yes ragi and other millets could be a cause for your kidney stones and I advise to stop of take it less frequently.

One more alternative is to do a test called 24 hour Urinary Calcium and if this test is showing high values then you can stop the Ragi but if it is in normal range you can continue to take Ragi.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .
