Question: hello Doctor.

My mother is 67 years old and is diabetic. she has the habit of taking water with small amount of cold milk mixed with it. this is taken twice a day.
Could you advise if this is ok for her or it weakens the bones ? She does not have a vitamin D tablet or sache prescribed to her.

Brief Answer:
Check calcium and vitamin D levels in blood

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

It is ok to take small amount of milk if there is no deficiency. Sometimes elder people do not digest milk so well.

Regarding calcium and vitamin D levels, she should get their levels checked in blood. Only after checking levels and confirming deficiency, these supplements should be taken. Calcium, if taken unnecessarily, can precipitate stones. Vitamin D also can have side effects if its levels increase beyond normal range.

Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brief Answer:
No

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

No it does not harm. Its just her practice that we can ignore.

Though milk does strengthen bones. If you feel that her bones maybe weak, then do the tests to confirm.
