Can Foreign Bodies Be Stuck In The Airways Without Any Initial Signs?

Question: Hi
My niece is two and a half. yesterday she was eating pasta (pieces about 1cm by 2cm) and she jumped on the couch. I didn't give her any more pasta and asked her to step down and she laid on my lap tummy first and attempted to go down the cough head first. At that stage she started coughing and sat upright and coughed for a bit and there was about a few seconds when the coughing stopped and she looked a bit uncomfortable then she resumed coughing and was fine after that. I had patted her on the back a bit during this. she had some water and was immediately ok. she did clear her throat with a purposeful cough but otherwise she was back to talking and playing and laughing as normal. today there has been no sign.. no coughing or anything. . she is as normal as ever. is this something we should investigate further with a doctor? just worried as I read some stuff online about how foreign bodies can be stuck in the airways even if the initial episode is over.. is it OK to just watch her or should I take her in for an x-ray or something?

Brief Answer:
Wait and watch

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concerns but don't worry. I would recommend you to watch for symptoms especially recurrent cough and breathlessness. If she doesn't show any of these, then there is no need for any investigation.

Hopefully it will be of help. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
Take care

hi Thanks for the reply.. just a bit edgy because she swallowed a small coin a few weeks ago but eventually came out in the toilet.. and now I know this sounds trivial but just got worried from reading too much online I think.. but yea thanks for your reply and will watch out for those symptoms but hopefully nothing comes of it.. this is probably a situation where she ended up swallowing the piece of pasta I hope

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
I appreciate your concerns. Do not worry. Most likely the cough episode was due to mild laryngeal irritation from pasta before she ingested it. So, she will hopefully be perfectly be fine.
Take care
