Hello and Welcome to Ask A Doctor service. I have reviewed your query as well as viewed the image and here is my advice.
You seem to have developed infection of the toe. Perhaps the infection got into through the area where you had hang nail and peeled it off. I suggest you to take an oral antibiotic e.g either Amoxycillin or Cephalexin 500mg, thrice daily for a week. In addition I suggest you to use an OTC topical antibiotic e.g either Neosporin Ointment Or Mupirocin 2% ointment, twice daily for a week. You should avoid pedicure till the infection resolves.

I think you do need oral antibiotics Neosporin ointment alone won't help. Yes, avoid walking barefoot. A minor trauma from walking barefoot, if not hangnail, could have been a portal of entry for bacteria.
