Question: Attached documents. Longitudinal longitudinal melanonychia. Approximately 2mm in width. The pigmentation is lighter towards the cuticle. Doctor had recommended that a biopsy is not necessary at this time and we should just monitor for any change. Has been the same condition a little over a year now. Family has no previous history of melanoma. Caucasian. Only medicines used recently was water pill and ibuprofen. Age 47. Would you recommend the same or immediately do a biopsy?

Brief Answer:
Regarding a melanonychia

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have viewed the image and gone through the query.

I can see a well defined, narrow band with uniform coloration and thickness in this image. These are all signs of it being benign and does not warrant a biopsy. Only thick, irregular, variably colored bands arouse some suspicion of melanoma.

Hope I have answered your query.
