Question: Hello Doctor,
My Son is 1 year and 8 months old. At night he cries and makes his stomach very tight with showing symptoms of pain in legs. We are thinking it to be gastric where he tries pressure to pass the gas but is unable to do so. We generally gives him colicaid syrup or Asafeotida water on his navel but that also helps him only for an hour or two after which he again wakes up crying. He makes his stomach very stiff and feels relaxed when stomach becomes soft. Please advice.

Brief Answer:
Possibly due to inadequate burping

Detailed Answer:

I have gone carefully through your query. The crying is possibly due to aerophagia i.e. abdominal distension due to ingestion of air while feeding. I would need to ask if the child is still breast feeding and whether the child receives bottle feeding when sleeping. If so, I would insist you to cut down on it as the child is ingesting more air than milk. Continue to give Colicaid and asafoetida but it is very important to burp properly after each feed. Make sure to hold the child in head upright position (on your lap) for at least 15-20 mins after each feed. It will help the excess air to escape and would provide relief.

Feel free to write back.

Regards.

He is feeding from bottle and drinks milk only at the time of sleep. Is there any kind of feeding bottle that are available to avoid aerophagia. Please also advice any other instant relief medicine instead of colicaid or home remedy.

Brief Answer:
Unless the source is dealt with, the problem will remain

Detailed Answer:
Unfortunately, there is no bottle that lets milk out without letting the air out. If feeding while lying down, the upper portion will always contain air and therefore invariably the child will ingest more air than actual feed. So, if the child feels like this the problem will continue irrespective of whether you give Colicaid or home remedies.

I would insist you to use a pacifier instead and to give semisolid feed during waking hours. Other than burping, no effective solution can be provided (other than Colicaid or home remedies).

Regards
