Question: About the covid 19 virus, first, if you are exposed to it ,does that mean you will absolutely get it, or can you just carry the virus and pass it on to others without ever getting sick yourself, and if you get it, are you then immune to it? And if you are exposed to it and do not get sick, how long are you contagious to others?

Brief Answer:
Incubation period of this disease is up to 14 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to 'Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

If someone is exposed to COVID19,this does that mean he/she will absolutely get the disease.
This depends on the degree of exposure and the indegenous immunity levels.
That is why,the people with extremes of ages (children and elderly),immune compromised patients, people on chemotherapy and who had kidney transplant are more vulnerable.

There are no definite data regarding the fact that can a person carry the virus and pass it on to others without ever getting sick himself.

Corona is a new zoonotic which has spread from animals to humans and was unknown prior to late 2019.

If someone is exposed to it and do not get sick,he/she will be contagious to the community for next 14 days because Incubation period of this disease is from 2 to 14 days.

Also, there are no statistical data in favour or against a lasting immunity due to sub clinical exposure.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
This is the reason that a self quarantine of 14 days is advocated for ones who are exposed.

Thank you for all that critical information. One more thing, is there a difference between being DIAGNOSED withCovid 19, or TESTING POSITIVE for the virus? Like, can you test positive, not be sick, which means "tested positive' or do you have to present with SYMPTOMS to be "diagnosed "with disease? Is there a difference? And if so, what is the difference?

Brief Answer:
A positive test of COVID 19 is an indicator of the presence of a virus that may or may not be associated with overt symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

PCR Test is done to detect COVID 19 infection.
The test is reported as positive when the virus is detected in the swab.
The test is reported as negative when the virus is not detected in the swab.

If someone is tested positive, s/he may or may not have full-blown symptoms.
Such persons are advised to remain isolated to prevent community infection and supportive and symptomatic treatment is given until they are tested negative (there is no specific antiviral cure available at this point of time).

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards

So can this scenario be possibly accurate: a person tests positive, isolates for 14 days, never have symptoms, and then after a period of time, test negative., and at that point, not be able to infect anyone? So I would assume that then, after 14 days in a person's body, the virus then dies, even if the person did not ever present symptoms or get sick?

Detailed Answer:
Very true...

If a person who has tested positive (he might not be having a clinically overt disease) is isolated for 14 days and do not develop full blown symptoms,it means the immune process of the individual has tide it over.
14 days is thought to be the maximum incubation period of Corona.
This is documented by repeat viral PCR test which should be negative by this time.
As the virus has been unable to replicate,it is not able to infect the community.

So then I guess that answers my question which is, to be brief, test positive, isolate yourself for recommended 14 days, never develop disease, then test again and be negative, and no longer be considered a danger or contagious. Correct? And again, it is not known whether this makes the individual immune from getting the virus again?
