Is Short Term Memory Loss Due To Dementia?

When someone has pretty bad short term memory loss but are still enjoying life, socializing, driving safely and happy in their own home is there any reason to have it diagnosed? My mum is almost 80, definitely has short term memory loss and we are keeping an eye on it but don't want her to have the sadness that a diagnosis of dementia would cause, If she gets worse we plan to have a live in caregiver.

Dear
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns

I went through your details. I suggest you not to worry much. Your mother is already 80. She should be happy living with you and with her own family. Therefore please do not try to assign a caregiver even though she has dementia. Short term memory loss in this case could naturally due to old age and degeneration of brain cells. Don't read too much into the loss of memory. As long as she is happy and enjoying life and socializing and driving safely, then I strongly believe that the case is not dementia at all. Consult your doctor if need be.

Hope this answers your query. Available for further clarifications.
Good luck.
