Diagnosed With Secondary Breast Cancer And Fluid In Lungs. On Tablet Form Of Chemo. What Is The Life Expectancy?

Hi my mum was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer and she has fluid on her lungs I think the doctor mentioned it was in her lungs by around 3mm.. They keep draining the lungs but the fluid keeps coming back.. Started on the tablet form of chemo to take at home.. Do you know the life expectancy with the treatment she is taking.. They have said they can't cure what she has.. Please be as honest as possible as we feel we need a rough timescale.. Thanks Amanda

Hello Amanda,
Thanks for writing in.

Sorry to hear about your mum's breast cancer with secondaries and fluid in her chest which does not respond to regular draining.

It must be a tough time for your mum and other in your family to accept truth.

In my opinion (after having worked in a cancer institute for 3 years) is that a patient with above features can pull through 3 to 6 months and this is speaking on the lower side, being pessimistic. If your mum is psychologically active and has strong will power, I will be happy to see her pull through another year at least.

Please remember that cancer is a terrible condition and patient needs immense willpower to challenge it till the end. We doctors try to do our little best to decrease the sufferings of our patients.

God Bless your mum.

Regards
