Would Taking Xareltoo Leads To Heavy Bleeding During Surgery?

I have an outpatient procedure next month. Nova sure, D&C and some other type of burning off abnormal cells, but I`m taking Xareltoo for my afib. My gynecologist said I can keep taking the bloodthinner, it won`t do any harm while doing the surgery. I`m scared that it will bleed a lot and not stop. Its done in an surgery center.

Hi,

This is a difficult question, and there is no clear answer as it depends on the risks vs benefits approach. Stopping the drug may cause a risk of blood clotting while continuing the drug may cause excessive bleeding. So the patient should be assessed in details and decision taken according to which risk is high. This may need asking the hematologist.

As a general rule, this has been divided into two groups, they say stop the drug in those who have surgery with high risk of bleeding and not to stop in surgeries with low risk of bleeding.

The operation you said is among the one who has a low risk of bleeding and the general recommendation is not to stop the drug in such condition as it does not increase the risk of major bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
