Will Spiral Fracture Of The Tibia Need Surgery?

My 4 year old son has a spiral fracture of the tibia yesterday late afternoon. We went to ER where they put a temporary cast on and we will see an orthopedic doctor tomorrow morning for casting. Should I expect that he will need pins or surgery? Will it be an option to get a waterproof cast for swimming once he is able to put pressure on it?

Hi,

As it's a spiral fracture diagnosed on an x-ray, is it a hairline fracture or dislocated fracture. If it's under a cast and hairline fracture than it might take some time to heal.

Usually lower limb fracture needs 4-6 weeks of immobilisation. And the needle and pins are only decided if it's a dislocated fracture. Post the immobilization execution of exercise is always advised for good outcome score.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
