Will Liposuction Be Helpful In Removing Excessive Fat In The Abdominal Area?

Hi, My husband has ehlers danlos and marfans. He used to be overweight growing up and lost some of this weight. He now has excess loose skin/fat in the tummy area. Also has excess fat in hip area as well. He is considering liposuction/tummy tuck. Do you know if these could be helpful or if the conditions he has would make the procedures innefectice?

Hello and Welcome,
You apparently are familiar with Ehlers Danlos to even ask this very educated question and it is a good question. My suggestion is to weigh the pros and cons. Is the excess skin unsightly to your husband? Many surgeries of this type are undertaken after significant weight loss and the outcome is outstanding. However, with the conditions you mention, is it worth the potential risks?

With Ehlers, as you probably already know, there is a problem with the connective tissue matrix meaning a possibility of increased infection, scarring, prolonged healing (depending on age and nutritional status/support) and surgical complications best explained by your plastic surgeon.

With Marfan's there are different potential concerns. Both areas should be addressed by a professional surgeon trained in these areas if the surgery is that important to your husband.

If you do consider this procedure despite the conditions mentioned, choosing a highly skilled surgeon with familiarity with Ehlers and with Marian's is preferable. Also, if you know the type of Ehler's your husband has, this, too, may figure into the equation as to possible complication type and extent.

So, to answer your question you would have to ask your husband if the extent of excess skin is bothersome enough to risk potential side-effects associated with the procedure and then make an appointment to discuss these areas with a well-trained surgeon who has access to your husband's history, especially surgical history, as you are right, these two conditions may make the procedure undesirable.
Respectfully, Kathryn J. Shattler, MS, RDN
