Hello. Can the Inner ear show as a dark spot on a CT of the head? My 27 yr old daughter had a CT after a fall and a concussion. We were given copies of the scans. I looked at them at home and noticed a dark spot towards the left side of her head, near her ear. The view is angled down from her nasal area towards a spot just below the base of her skull. The report says everything was fine. I am a nurse but do not look at CTs much, just X-rays of babies! In Xrays, dark means air, usually.

Hello Kay thanks for calling HCM I think that your reports tells you that everything is fine or nothing abnormal could be seen, if so I think that the dark spot meaning air density as you said and in the area you mentioned near the ear there are many normal anatomical structures containing air like normal mastoid bone, auditory canals. so if it is normal report it means normal air distribution so don't worry about it. and you have to know that after trauma or falling down we check for hemorrhage of fractured bones and brain hemorrhage appears white density in the CT films, and fractures appear as dark linear density passing through the bone, and your report revealed nothing. so don't worry, hoping your daughter to be fine thanks Dr. AYMAN ELSIFEY
