Will Hyperthyroidism Resolve By Itself As It Came Postpartum?
hi, i gave birth to a baby 8 weeks ago and at my 6 week postpartum checkup i found out my thyroid has become overactive with TSh 0.04. Prior to that it was mostly sub clinical hypothyroid for past 4 years with TSH ranging from 3.25 to 6.04 but never hyperactive. Is there any reason why i suddenly became hyperthyroid and would this resolve itself since it seems to only came suddenly postpartum?
Hello and thank you for asking on HCM! You are right, the most probable diagnosis is postpartum thyroiditis. It usually develops in two phases: hyperactive one that lasts a few weeks and doesn't need treatment than an underactive phase is supposed to develop that lasts up to 1 year usually. It needs treatment if the TSH level reaches high levels (over 10 mUi/ml). Anyway i would suggest to see an endocrinologist in person to confirm the diagnosis. Hope i have been helpful. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
