Why Should Intercourse Be Avoided For A Week While Being Treated For Chlamydia?

hi. I took 2 500MG each doses of Azithromycin last Wednesday to treat chlamydia. My doctor said I can t have sex for 7 days. Is this just to be safe or a real order? Why would it take 7 whole days to treat the infection? I had sex on the fifth day and want to know the chances that I gave it to my partner?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that is passed during sexual contact. It is one of the diseases listed among sexually transmitted illness (STIs).
Chlamydia is easy to treat. You would be advised to take a course of antibiotics for a week.
You need to abstain from having intercourse during the period of its treatment as it takes about a week for the complete eradication of the organism. Otherwise, there could be a chance for reinfection due to incomplete effectiveness of the treatment.
It is advisable for both you and your partner(s) to be treated for chlamydia before you have intercourse again, so as to prevent its recurrence.
It would be ideal for you to get re-tested for chlamydia in 3 to 4 months.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
