Why Is Regular Food Smelling Unpleasant?

For about a week now foods we regularly eat smell/taste different/unpleasant to my husband, specifically meat and beans, we think. He does not seem to be experiencing any other changes or symptoms. He has a dr appointment for Friday, but is concerned enough that he intends to try to be seen earlier. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?
