Why Is My Blood Glucose Level Constant At 265?

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on Thursday. I was placed on metformin 500 mg daily and told to watch my diet. I ve been watching everything I put in my mouth for three days and still my sugar is 265 with diet and medication. If I don t eat is still 265. If I eat it s around 265. I m really confused.

HI
Thanks for posting your query to Healthcaremagic .

Blood sugar is controlled by 3 factors .

1. Food Intake.
2. Physical Activity
3. Medications .

If at all you are doing 15-20 minutes of daily exercise with proper diet and still your sugars are 265 then your medication dose needs to be increased .
I need to know whether you are taking metformin once or twice or thrice a day ?

Kindly revert back .

Are you watching your physical activity? check your blood sugar, run for 30 min and again check blood sugar. See the difference. You may need to increase the dose of medicines(do it after consultation.. no self treatment please). diet and activity has to be watched daily. Even if you don't eat, sugar is high because of organs like liver producing sugar(gluconeogenesis).

Hello there,
I understand your confusion. Metformin is a good drug and has been suggested as first line of treatment for newly diagnosed diabetes by many international guidelines. Now, it would have helped to know your sugars at diagnosis to guide you better as sometimes initially one may need more medications to control the sugars and then gradually reduce the medicines. Hope when you mean watch your diet you have actually made changes like reducing the carbohydrate and sweet content of food and increasing vegetables and salads. Another thing I would like to warn you about is about your glucometer. Seeing the same reading repeatedly can sometimes mean that you are not using the glucometer correctly. You need to revisit the physician who prescribed you metformin and discuss the issue of constant same readings as your doctor can evaluate the real reason for uncontrolled sugars and make changes accordingly.Till then make sure that you are able to use the glucometer correctly.
Include some form of exercise in your daily routine if your heart condition allows. That will also help in bringing down the blood sugars further. Hope this helps.
Take care.
