Why Is A Spinal Tap Procedure Required While Suffering From Iron Deficiency?
Why would my hematologist order a spinal tap for low iron? My hemoglobin was WNL and it was stated that it appeared my reserves of iron are depleted post RNY Gastric Bypass. However, because the hemoglobin seemed normal that it does appear I am absorbing some iron.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Varinder's Response
If your doctor is going for a spinal tap, he is suspecting some brain infection or disease as any chronic disease anywhere in the body impairs iron metabolism.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
