Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
In January of 2010 I had one stent placed in my right coronary artery. It was 80% blocked. I started off taking Effient for 2 years and then was switched to 75mg of Clopidogrel in addition to 1200mg fish oil, 81mg aspiren and 40 mg of lipitor, all taken daily. I m a construction worker and am always getting small cuts which bleed a lot, I also look like a giant bruise. My cardiologist says I need to stay on the Clopidogrel the rest of my life. From what I ve read, 1 year is the normal time frame. What are your thoughts on why he wants me on Clopidogrel for the rest of my life. I am 56 yrs. old.
Hello, welcome to health care magic. For drug eluting stents the mjnimum requirement for clopidogrel is atleast one year but it advised to take anti platelet drugs for longer duration to avoid the complications of very late stent thrombosis , bleeding is a known complication of clopidogrel.
