Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi. having lost 23kgs i eat and maintain a very healthy diet with very little carbs.i have maintained this lifestyle change for 4 years now. i dont eat take away or fast foods, cakes or biscuits. however my cholestrol recently came back as 6.8. i am a little confused as to why this would happen
I presume that cholesterol level which you have mentioned is total cholesterol value. It is definitely high. Sometimes cholesterol levels remain high due to other reasons also besides diet such as low physical activity, increased levels of emotional stress and due to genetic reason which is beyond our control. If you are genetically predisposed to hypercholesterolemia, your liver naturally produces more cholesterol than normal. Yes, our liver does manufacture cholesterol besides what we take in as food. In such a case, you must consult a physician who may prescribe you medications to bring down cholesterol.
Carbohydrates do not increase cholesterol, it is your total fat intake including both saturated and unsaturated fats in your diet which might be causing high cholesterol. If you use too much of a healthy oil in cooking, it will also raise cholesterol no matter how much it is good for lowering cholesterol. Hope you have got my point. Review your diet and see where you might be going wrong.
