my 3 month old daughter Ella strains and cries for ages before a bowel movement. sometimes up to 2 hours of intermittent hysterical crying and straining. After she goes she is fine, and the stool is soft and normal looking. formula fed on an easily digestible formula. this happens every 2nd day or so. if she hasnt gone in 2 days i will use a suppository, which results in straining and sooking but not as bad.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi, welcome to HCM.
Your baby has intermittent crying and straining before a bowel movement, this is colicky pain. Some babies tend to have increase propencity of colicky pain.
In most of the cases keeping the child on his abdomen in your lap for 2 minutes relieves the colicky pain. If pain is not relieved by this method then you need to give simethicone drops like colicaid 4 drops three times a day for 2 days and the pain will be relieved.
As child grows older, these pain episodes naturally decreases.
I hope this has helped you. Take care.
