Why Do I Feel Cramps In My Limbs At Night?

Hello. For the past 6 months or so I have been experiencing severe leg cramps at night. Tonight during the evening my left hand went into a cramp. What s going on? I am female, just turned 70, very active, have always been strong, not overweight, but also not limber at all, even as a child. Thanks for some info.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

In absence of any trauma or injury, the symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to:
1. Deficiency of certain nutrients like Iron, Vitamin B 12, Calcium, Magnesium, etc.
2. Any fluctuation in blood pressure levels
3. Altered blood sugar levels
4. Inadequate hydration & nutrition status.
5. Peripheral neuropathy.
Investigations like complete blood count, estimation of blood pressure and blood sugar levels will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Symptomatic relief can be obtained with nervigenic agents (like Vit B6, B12, Folic acid) as well as multivitamin & mineral supplementation.
Use of heating pad, application of analgesic+muscle relaxant gel & physiotherapy exercises will also be helpful.

There is no need to worry, you will be fine.
Meanwhile, maintain adequate hydration, take a healthy balanced diet & avoid stress.

Wishing a good health.
Take care.
