Why Do I Cough & Spit Blood?

Im currently 18 years old. Recently, this whole week I've been waking up in the morning having to spit out roughly a teapsoon of blood. I've been also coughing during the day quite a lot. What exactly is going on. Also I have had a blocked nose for a very long time - I took medication a while back to clear it but it hasnt really helped. What exactly is going on with the blood though?

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
You are having hemoptysis (blood in sputum).
And common causes for hemoptysis are lung infection (pneumonia, tuberculosis), bronchitis, lung cancer etc.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system, chest x ray and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
Chest x ray is needed for lung infection and cancer.
PFT is must for the diagnosis of bronchitis.
You will need antibiotic and inhaled treatment on the basis of reports.
If you are active smoker then you should quit smoking as soon as possible.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
