Why Are Fingernails Of An Infant Falling Off?

What could cause bits of fingernails and a toe nail to fall off of a healthy 10 month old who drinks 24 or more oz of formula daily and eats a healthy diet of table foods? This began a week ago and she is lossing bits of nail rapidly. Her pediatrician says it isn't fungus.

Micro nutrient deficiency of Zinc and Iron could be the cause for it, if fungal infection is ruled out.
Iron and multi vitamin supplement will be helpful.
