Why Am I Having My Cheek Swollen With Pain?

Two days ago I noticed my cheeks to be puffy followed by a sore throat and neck. Then the next day my symptoms persisted to severe headaches, dry mouth, very swollen lymph nodes under the ears and jaw, neck, and throat. They are very tender and sore, it's hard to move my neck. I have been coughing a deep, dry cough along with a runny nose. I'm extremely weak and tired. When I look inside my mouth my cheeks are severly swollen, along with my tongue and throat is red. My doctor said that I had quite a bit of fluid behind my ears and prescribed me an antibiotic to treat an infection. I feel like it may be something else.

Hi...
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns...

As per your complain the symptoms seems to be due to viral infection of the Parotid glands causing Mumps Parotitis and it seems to be causing bilateral facial swelling, dry mouth, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes and also other symptoms..
It is highly communicable and can transfer from one infected individual to a normal person..
It is generally diagnosed by clinical examination itself while if doubt is there certain tests like saliva culture, Polymerase chain reaction and serum amylase has to be done to confirm the cause..
Once it is confirmed there is no direct medicinal treatment for the same and as it is highly contagious for first 5 days you need to take extra care not to share your personal belongings with others to prevent infection..
You can take acetaminophen to relieve pain and do alternate warm and cold compresses over the swelling..
You can do warm saline gargles..
Drink plenty of fluids and take ample of rest..
Take a soft diet..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
