Why Am I Getting Shingles While Stopping Iron Supplements?

I have been diagnosed with chronic anaemia (for past 18 months) and although on iron supplements (210 mg tds Ferrous Fumarate) I have erratic ferritin levels (currently at 8, with Hb of 117), particularly when taken off iron (temporary basis). I am also suffering from shingles repeatedly and wonder if there is a connection?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

You have iron deficiency anemia. If you have been taking iron tablets regularly and still having the problem, then there is some problem with your iron absorption from the gut.
There is no direct relatioship between iron deficiency anemia and shingles. But repeated episodes of shingles( herpes zoster) can occur in a person with impaired immunity due to any cause.
If you have further query, I am available to answer.
Wish you good health.
Dr. Noble Zachariah
