Why CT Renal With Contrast Test Is Used?

Hi, i am a 45yr old female. I have a sore lower back from a car accident. I have left side front and back pain around my left hip area, which I put down to being from my car accident as my lower back has been sore since the accident. My doctor said after doing an over 45 yr old check up, that I had a small trace of blood in my urine. I have had about 5 urine tests done and all results came back with a small trace of blood. I have had a kidney & bladder ultra sound, which came back normal. He is now sending me for a 'CT renal with contrast' test. what is he looking for? What could it be?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

CT scan is an accurate method of analyzing the kidneys. The contrast will show any suspicious areas which need attention. This might not be visible on ultrasound scan. Contrast CT will also show any difference in excretion by the kidneys. Any small stone in the urinary tract will also show up. CT scan has accuracy to pick up stones of size 2mm. The finding of trace blood in your urine surely means that there is something which is causing blood to come in urine. By doing delayed contrast on CT scan can show any blocks in the urinary passages.
