Which Specialist Should I Consult For High Ammonia Levels In The Blood?
What specialist should I contact for high ammonia levels in the blood? Mother was admitted into hospital with high ammonia levels and us on lactulose and rifaximin. She has since been discharged but not certain if this u s result of liver issues. She dies not drink and has never drank.
High ammonia level can suggest a liver dysfunction or from some metabolic disorders. Liver dysfunction is the most common cause. We need details regarding her symptoms and reports of investigations, especially liver function test to have a better idea.
If this was from liver dysfunction, a gastro enterologist / hepatologist will the apt person. If the cause is not settled, you can stick on to an internal medicine specialist until evaluation is complete.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
