Which Specialist Should I Consult For An Allergic Reaction To Antibiotics?

Hi. I need to get my children tested for questionable allergies to a few different antibiotics. What kind of Dr. should I go to for this. My Pediatrician does not do it and our ENT tested my daughter for seasonal and environmental allergies but does not test for medication allergies.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You should consult an allergist or immunologist. An allergist or immunologist is a physician specially trained to diagnose, treat and manage allergies including allergic reactions to antibiotics, asthma, and immunologic disorders.

Antibiotics allergies are diagnosed by a careful review of the patient's medical history and symptoms by an allergist. If an allergy to an antibiotic such as penicillin is suspected, your allergist may do a skin test to confirm the allergy.

With a skin test, the allergist administers a small amount of a suspect antibiotic to your skin either with a tiny needle that scratches the skin, an injection or a patch. A positive reaction to a test will cause a red, itchy, raised bump.

A positive result suggests you may have an antibiotic allergy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
