The Saturday before Christmas I took a Jointace tablet which by Sunday evening caused a major shellfish allergy reaction 30 hours after taking it. Anaphylatic shock symptoms included hives, face and mouth swelling, (angiodoema) blistered swollen lips then my throat started to swell. I suspected it might be a food allergy, looked it up on the internet then called 111 service who sent me to A & E of Swindon's Great Western Hospital. In the waiting room after triage, my tongue started to swell and I was treated with intravenous cortico steroids which immediately brought relief of swelling of tongue, throat and mouth.
I was sent home about 6 hours later with 3 days of Prednidazol steroid tablets (can't spell it) . The hives took many days to go down.
I did not know I had a shellfish allergy - but only pieced it together because of 2 previous nausea/diarhhoea reactions to paella - which I thought were caused by ordinary food poisoning -
My main query is about the after effects of steroids: Over Christmas, Chocolate tasted very salty and water tasted sweet. Even brands of chocolate I know well tasted horrible. I have even gone off the taste of white wine!
Today even my vegetable soup tasted spicy
I have had two or three bouts of violent stomach reactions and nausea after eating something that doesn't "agree" with me.
For example my daughter cooked a pasta, bacon, cheese and tomato dish which tasted incredibly spicy to me but which she said was very bland. I had a glass and a half of white wine. An hour later I ate half a box of maltesers and all hell broke loose!
Violent stomach pains, could barely keep my food down. Burping, insomnia. Terrible night sweat at 3am
Could there be something else wrong with my tastebuds or is this normal after steroids? When will my taste buds return to normal>
Thank you
