When Should Fosamax Be Stopped Before A Dental Surgery?

I take 70mg alendronate sodium tablet weekly. I have a loose tooth and must have roots of the tooth cut out and need to stop taking fosamax. The dentist said I "probably would need to stop taking fosamax 3-6 months before the surgery but to check with my medical doctor who prescribed the fosamax." She said to do what the dentist suggested. He was guessing! Do I simply stop taking the weekly tab and how long should I be off the drug before surgery?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain Fosamax contains Alendronate and in case if extraction is done in that case there are chances Osteonecrosis that can cause damage to the jaw bone and cause fractures..

So in case if you are taking Fosamax then you need to get off it for atleast 3 months before you proceed to get the tooth extracted..

The cause of the condition is not defined and may include the possibility of bisphosphonates altering the formation of blood vessels or bone micro-architecture.

You should also take proper care and get the bone density checked before proceeding for extraction..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
