When Is Antibiotic Needed For Sore Throat, Cough, And Congestion?
My husband has a sore throat, cough, and congestion. He has been feeling bad for 2 days. He is taking an expectorant ( Mucinex), nyquil to help him sleep at night, and ibuprofen. How do you know when you need an antibiotic and not just treating your symptoms?
I have gone through your query regarding severe cough in your husband and he is not getting any relief even after taking decongestants. You are interested to know about the use of antibiotics.
Here in this connection I would like to tell you that antibiotic is always needed whenever there is bacterial infection and this is decided by-
1- Culture and sensitivity of throat swab.
2- Throat swab for gram's staining.
By the inferences of above investigations one may find out the causative organism and the most suitable antibiotic.
Regards.
