What Would Possibly Cause Difficulty In Gaining Weight?

My 10 yr old son is failing to gain adequate weight. He eats well and does not have eating disorders. In Oct 2011 he started showing tinnitus symptoms then within a week of onset, malaise, personality change, sudden insomnia and crazy itching (only at night-time) on his body. Blood work taken 4 weeks later showed bilirubin levels increased. My gp told me my son had Gilberts syndrome. I didn t buy it. I Within a month my son normalised, insomnia went and he became himself, Quickly regained cognitive functioning . e.g maths skills came back., however tinnitus has stayed with him. Later bloodwork showed normal bilirubin. During 2012 my son started showing new symptons, bone pains which had him in tears sometimes, nausea, bouts of diarrea and more. Twice he has had temp spikes up to 39.5C. Both times his tinnitus gets louder during the spikes but resumes normal levels when temp normalises. Paracetomol brings temp down and my son is well again. No flu symptons or anything explains the spikes. My son now looks anorexic. 143 cm high and 58 lbs weight (just over 26 kg). Shows vit d insufficiency which might explain bone pains. He cannot tolerate any aerobic exercise for more than a few minutes. he gets hot really quickly when doing other sports like indoor climbing even when it is cold and everyone else feels cold. 2010 oct he weighed 44lbs, 20 kgs so has gained 14 lbs in just over 3 .5 years. During this period he doesn t gain any weight then will suddenly gain a few lbs e.g from mar 2013 to march 2014 weighed between 55 and 56 lbs. Has suddenly gained weight in last month of 2 lbs. From oct 2011 through to Aug 2012 weighed 48 lbs then gained 7 lbs fom Aug to Mar 2013. I keep going back to my GP s but am getting little help. I am becoming increasingly alarmed by my sons frail appearance, even though he is fine in himself regardless of tinnitus, nausea and occasional bone pains. I changed our diet /nov 2013 to a more pre/pro biotic diet. Since then no diarrea and less body pains. Can you advise.

Hi,

Symptoms you described (bone pain, weight loss, itching, fever) require detailed examination. Infectious diseases like tuberculosis, brucellosis, hepatitis B/C may cause these symptoms as well as some hematological pathologies. A thorough evaluation including physical examination, full biochemical tests, full blood count, acute phase reactans as well as chest x-ray by an internal medicine specialist is mandatory.

May you recover soon
