What does a child with congenital hypothyroidism look like, what are the symptoms? I am an adult with this disorder. what can I expect, my health to be like in the future? I have had this disorder, since I was a year old.I was dianosed when I was a year old, because my development was slow.

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hi,
1. 50-60% of this disease dont have any symptoms at birth. later they present with developmental delay. At birth usual symptoms are jaundice, lethargy, constipation, dry skin etc
2. This is a hormone deficiency - so if you replace the hormone adequately there wont be any health issues in future. If not treated properly you can have intellectual deficits, memory loss, elevated cholesterol and increased risk of heart disease.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help

With warm regards,

Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM)
Consultant Endocrinologist.
