What Treatment Is Recommended For This X-ray Result For Knee?

My wife is 67 years old,91 kg by weight and 162 cm in height. She had total removal of thyroids in 2006.Since then she is on Thyroxine Sodium tablets 100 & 25 mcg.Her BP is around 160/100.Pulse 90 or so.She takes now,Telma 80H (Telmisartan and Hydrochlorothiazide), Asomex 2.5. Earlier she was taking Envas 5mg and Asomex D since 2006,without much effect on BP. She also takes Glucosamine 1500 mg tablets daily for knee joint pain. Her continued discomforts are (i) Continuous daylong feeling of fatigue, (ii) no respite from arthritic pain without Etoshine pain killer. X-ray of knee shows gross O.A. change in both knee joints .Blood sugar is O.K.Lipid profile is O.K. What is your advice?

Hi there. Thanks for your question.

Total knee replacement surgery is one of the most successful surgery in modern medicine. The results are good since the painful part of arthritic knee are completely removed and replaced with artificial knee joint.Since the procedure involves such complete removal of arthritic painful components in properly selected cases it is very successful.

Also as your wife gets older it is inevitable that more issues like raised blood pressure can increase the risk with surgery. The surgery is that much safer for her now at the age of 67 than say when she becomes 76.

So with the back ground of pain , affected quality of life and gross OA in x-rays, total knee replacement is a viable option for your wife. Of course the need can be better assessed after seeing her and the X rays in person.

Hope this helps.

All the best. Regards,

Dr.SBK
