What Treatment Besides Corticosteroids Do You Suggest For Symptoms That Match Bell's Palsy?

Good evening! My husband has been showing symptoms that match Bell's Palsy all week. Can you recommend any treatment besides the corticosteroids? I think he had an allergic reaction the last time he was treated with prednisone. We are trying a vegan diet for the next two weeks to detox. Also, he is exercising & massaging the affected facial muscles. Any suggestions before we see our family doctor?
Thank you very much!

hello,
The only medical treatment that may influence the outcome is the administration of systemic corticosteroids within the first few days after the onset of paralysis, but this therapy should be avoided if Lyme disease is suspected. if you are allergic to prednisolone you can try with other substitutes after consulting a neurophysician. Combining steroids with antiherpetic drugs such as acyclovir may decrease the severity and length of paralysis. It is also helpful to protect the eye with lubricating drops or ointment and a patch if eye closure is not possible.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Rakesh Karanwal's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Corticosteroids are the BEST anti-allergic drugs and are therefore unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. However, as Bell's Palsy occurred more than 7 days back, Prednisone will be of not much efficacy. You may therefore, give 7-10 days' course of an anti-viral drug, such as, acyclovir.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable/modified treatment as advised.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
