What To Do To Get Rid Of The Pain In The Upper Rib Cage Which Hurts Only When Laying Down?

Hello, I have had this pain in my upper rib cage for the past 5-6 yrs. First , they thought it was my gall bladder, so we had that removed, then I developed a gall stone, removed that. I was told it was a fat deposit. It only hurts when I lay down and have to use a heating pad and pain pills when it is intolerable. What can I do to get rid of this?

Hi,

Pain near the upper rib cage can be because of costochondritis. Costochondritis, also known as Tietze’s syndrome, is an inflammation of the cartilage in the rib cage. The condition usually affects the cartilage where the upper ribs attach to the breastbone an area known as the costosternal joint. People with costochondritis often experience chest pain in the upper and middle rib area. Most likely your pain is costochondritic. A chest x-ray PA view, and anti inflammatory medicines are recommended to be taken.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ramesh Kumar
