what is a hiatus hernia? I was diagnosed with one about 25 years ago and don t remember how it was treated or exactly what it was. I think it s back because I am having some trouble swallowing. my doctor gave me some pills that melt in your mouth yesterday and they helped quite a lot. I am 81 years old and a little overweight

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the hiatus hernia is gap in the diaphragmatic portion involving stomach and gastro-esophageal junction, the laxity of which gives chance for stomach and cardia to slide upwards towards thorax. There are many reasons for the hiatus hernia, common among them are obesity, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, sedentary life style etc.

The symptoms include:
- Upper abdomen fullness and belching after meals
- Recurrent nausea, vomiting after heavy food intake
- Sensation of compression over lower chest
- Vague burning lower chest or upper abdomen
- Early satiety
- Gabhraman in severe reflux issues

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
