What Should Be The Pus Cell Count In An Infant?

Hi Doctor, My baby boy had UTI at 4 weeks of age and was treated with antibiotics. Now at 6 weeks, we did a urine routine to check if everything is alright. The pus cells count shows 3-4, though the reference range is 1-2. Is this normal or do we need to do a urine culture? The first time he had UTI, the kidney USG was normal.

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, you should definitely get done urine culture.
First of all, UTI (Urinary tract infection) issue not common in neonates especially in male child.
So any sort of raised white blood cell count in urine should be evaluated thoroughly to rule out resistant infection.
His recent urine report is suggestive of 3-4 pus cells which are high forum his age.
So better to get done urine culture and sensitivity report.
Culture report will isolate the causative organism and sensitivity report will guide about effective antibiotic treatment.
Don't worry, he will be alright.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your son. Thanks.
