What Precautions Should Be Taken In Person With HSV-2?

I was diagnosed with HSV-2 last May but have never had an outbreak. I found out by chance cause I had decided to get tested for it. About five days ago my palms got very itchy and some bumps appeared on both my palms. I showed my doctor and she suspected that it was a herpes outbreak. My whole body was very itchy cause I possibly had an allergic reaction to the adhesive from bandaids and a small infection from a scratch on my shin. I m assuming the combination of the two is what brought the outbreak to the surface. My question is how contagious are my hands and how should I care for them because I m a personal trainer and work with people all day. The bumps have not broken any skin and are still under the surface. They are not painful, just annoying and mostly itchy.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

It would be best if you can take a few days off from work, and also request your doctor to initiate a course of anti-viral medication.

If you cannot stay away fron work, then try to keep your hands well covered, with gloves and long sleeved t-shirts. This will prevent others from noticing the bumps and also prevent any fluid leaking and coming in contact with commonly used equipment. Other than this, nothing more can be done at this point.

I once again emphasize on keeping away from public places to be the best option for a while.

Best wishes.
