What Medication Is Suggested For Stage 3 Edema Of Lower Legs?

Hope I m not cheating or wasting your time. I m a med student. 2nd year. Pt is showing signs of stage 3 pitting edema lower legs. Heart and Kd tests come back negative. Possible venous insufficiency. However Pt insists the edema is sudden onset after spider bite. Bite was unilateral / right. Edema is bilateral, right is worse. I seem to remember a lecture of reading something about elephantitis of viral origin. Web search is turning up elephatiasis / west nile virus. Any thoughts? Pt is in St. Petersburg, FL.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Low dose oral diuretic like lasix can be given. Conditions like kidney disease and cardiac failure have to be ruled out first. Check his protein and albumin status as hypoalbuminemia can also cause leg edema.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
