Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Long Can An Person Survive With Leaking Valves?
My mother is 91, her cardiologist said heart muscle is strong but she has a couple of leaking valves and one is significant. Sue to her age they will not operate, She takes several pills for angina and various heart issues since she had open heart surgery 10 years ago. She take no cholesterol meds (long story). Question is what is her outlook. Prior to being told this I was looking for a long term nursing home as its getting more difficult for me to work full time, raise a family and take care of her. But if her outlook is less than 9 months I think I should discontinue the nursing home idea and suck it up and take care of her. I know none of us know for sure but how long can someone live with a significant leak at age 91?

hi valve leak is more common at that age,it can be usually aortic or mitral, mostly due to the age related calcification redo-cardiac surgery is also impossible at that age with strong cardiac muscle, her left ventricle pump should also be good. as such with that condition no one can give the life expectancy. better to plan for your nursing home care,to prevent stress in your lifestyle. all the best take care
