What Kind Of Surgery To I Need For Morton's Neuroma While Also Suffering From Osteoarthritis And Osteoporosis?

Hi Dr. Grief. I have been diagnosed with Morton's neuroma. Do I continue to see a DPM or should I seek an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot surgery. I am 65, have osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and I would actually prefer to have an orthopedic doctor handling this situation rather than continue the long process of corticosteroid shots, etc., and they have side effects, plus I cannot take NSAIDs. Thank you for your opinion. Angelina

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
Surgery for Morton neuroma include either decompressing or resecting the nerve. Choice of surgical approach, plantar or dorsal. The dorsal approach has the advantage of low wound complications, lower incidence of plantar scar formation, and immediate weight bearing. The plantar approach is more direct, requiring less dissection, and preserves the transverse metatarsal ligament, theoretically reducing metatarsal instability.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
