What Is The Treatment For Restless Legs?

Hi. Is there anything that can be done about Restless Legs. I suffer from it a little, I m 52. But my elderly mother, aged 86, suffers from it badly both day and night - she has difficulty getting a good nights rest. She s also suffering a lot from pain after having shingles two and a half years ago - apparently no cure for that.Any suggestions would be great. Thank You Miriam

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
As you mentioned that you are 52 years , while your mother is 86 years old and both of you are having RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME ( RLS).
So diagnosis is confirmed .
Iron deficiency and renal failure may cause R LS ,which is then considered as secondary RLS.
The symptoms of R L S are exquisitely sensitive to DOPAMINERGIC drugs ( e.g. pramipexole 0.25 to 1.0 mg q 8 pm or ropinirole 0.5 to 4.0 mg q8pm), whic is the treatment of choice.
Narcotics, benzodiazepines & certain anticonvulsants may also be the therapeutics values .
As these drugs are prescription drugs , so please consult a physician and get his opinion.
Good luck.
