Hello.
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I went through your daughter's history. I would like to make following suggestions to you:
1. First of all, I would like to ask you how
milk allergy was diagnosed. This is the most important part as there are many conditions with similar symptoms at this age. A detailed history supported by investigations is required to diagnose or rule out milk allergy.
2. If she has milk allergy for sure, I would suggest her partially hydrolyzed formula, rather than soy based formula at this age. However, it is costlier than soy based formula.
3. Of course, some babies with can tolerate soy based formulas but there is possibility to development of allergy to soy also. Some infants are allergic to both milk and soy together. So personally I would not prefer it before age of at least 6 months. However, soy formula is cheaper as well as easily available.
4. Regarding breast feeding, personally I would recommend ONLY
breastfeeding up to 6 months of age and other foods/formulas to be introduced after 6 months of age. Exclusive breast feeding up to 6 months of age is one of the protecting factors for allergies in baby.
Of course, if baby is allergic to milk, mother should avoid milk and milk products as long as she breast feeds the baby as tiny amount of milk protein can pass to baby via breast feeding.
Due to these all restrictions, I put emphasis on confirmation of diagnosis of milk allergy.
4. True milk allergy is a self-limiting condition in most of the children. There is no specific treatment. Avoidance of milk and milk products is the most important part of management. Some probiotics can help but they also do not "cure" milk allergy.
I hope above points regarding breast feeding, formulas and milk allergy will help you to take right choices for your daughter.
Wish your daughter the best of the health.
