Hi.
Gastritis is not a common problem in an elderly person of 78 age.
I would advise for an upper GI Endoscopy to rule out Gastric ulcer or Stomach Cancer as the most probable reason as you Grandfather is loosing the appetite also.
Loss of appetite is one of the first symptoms in development of a Cancer and also loosing weight.
He also has pre-existing medical disorders like high blood pressure- Hypertension and diabetes mellitus . It is possible these also must have not been under control leading to further problems of excessive gas formation.
Also necessary is a CT scan of the abdomen and colonoscopy .
I find this answer helpful
